Descriptive: Ode to Shoelaces

This poem I chose as my descriptive writing because of the way I describe the shoelaces. I not only describe the way they look, but also get descriptive with what they do during the day. I use words to describe appearing, but also to stimulate mental pictures of what is going on. This assignment was originally and remains the ode poetry assignment where we had to chose an object and write about it.

Ode to shoelaces

A shoelace,                                       He fulfills its
string                                                 purpose
laced through                                    and hugs your
your precious                                    shoe
shoes.                                               throughout
It wasn’t always                                the day
that way.                                           only letting go
The shoelace                                    when you want.
used to be
too difficult,
it was for the big kids.
You had
velcro.
Quick and easy.
But now you
are older
and need
the shoelace.
The velcro to
you has now
been passed down
for laces.
The small part
of such
an important
thing.
Shining white,
pulled taunt,
and put together
in a bow.
It bounces
to the
beat of your walk.
A shoelace
locks your foot
in your shoe
like a chin strap
does for a helmet.
It is happy
to do
it’s job.
